Sproul, Jr. on What is Missing in the Bible

Don't let the title fool ya.  RC Sproul, Jr., is not saying that the Bible is lacking, but instead there are some things that Scripture is not entirely thorough in addressing or answering.  His interesting article presents five things that are surprisingly missing from the Bible in the realm of theology.  This is important and insightful.  Though Scripture is perspicuous (clear) and presents all that God, in His Divine Providence, desired to reveal to us, that does not mean that the Bible says everything about everything including some areas like theology (Sproul highlights especially ecclesialogy).

Here is his list of five things:

1.  Proper Form of Church Government
2.   Proper Form of a Service of Worship
3.  Proper Form For Preaching the Word
4.  Proper Way to Move From Single to Married
5.  More Information on the Incarnation and the Trinity

One of the reasons for such a list (and more could be added to it) is because Scripture is not a systematic theology textbook (though one can put together a robust systematic theology based on Scripture).  Instead, Scriptures shows theology in real life with real people.  The Pauline letters are particularly insightful here.  Notice how Paul frequently presents theology and then applies the theology directly to his readers.  The Gospels also do the same thing (especially since they are inherently Christological).

More could be added here, but Sproul, Jr. is on to something.  We must be careful not to be dogmatic on issues where Scripture don't allow us to.  On the other hand, we must be dogmatic on issues that Scripture commands us to.  The gospel is one of those issues where dogmatism, clarity, and boldness are needed.
