I was going to write a long article on the recent Rob Bell video titled "Resurrection" which was released during Easter week. Instead I will simply post the video and simply say that he completely misses the point of the resurrection. Jesus did not die because he challenged a corrupt system of Jewish legalism and the pagan politics of the Romans. Rob Bell and other Emergents see in Jesus a sacrifice that conquered systemic sin.
As a result of this wrong understanding of the cross, they miss the purpose of the resurrection. The resurrection, followed by the crucifixion, affected our salvation. The cross deals with our sin and the resurrection grants to us righteousness. We now live in righteousness.
Bell is just adding to the case that the Emerging Church is just a revamped version of the social gospel of a hundred years ago.
Here's the video:
Is this what relevance looks like? Is this what Christians must do to reach the culture? Whatever happened with "thus says the Lord?" If the gospel is transcendent, then Bell could have saved himself a lot of money in producing this video.
