What Does It Mean to Be a Christian?

The following video is telling. It asks the question, "What does it mean to be a Christian," and includes clips from Anderson Cooper, and emerging Church leaders Brian McLaren and Tony Campolo. To put it simply, I am simply applaud by what I see here especially by the "New Evangelicals," primarily McLaren and Campolo.

Here is conclusive evidence that the Emerging Church has become nothing more than an inclusive, postmodern social gospel movement. Just listen carefully what Campolo said:

The fact is there ARE 2,000 verses in Scripture that talk about caring for the poor. And I don't care what else your into, if you ignore what the Bile is really about, helping poor and oppressed people, you've missed the message of Jesus...It's not going to be, "Virgin birth? Agree or disagree?" I see you've got the white band on with Bono, and here is a guy who is a rock singer who has done more to articulate what Christianity is really than we preachers. In fact he says to be Christian is to commit to the poor and oppressed. The only description that Jesus gives of judgment day is how we treated the poor. On that day, he isn't going to ask us theological questions...Here's what it's going to be, 25 chapter of Matthew, "I was hungry, did you feed me. I was naked, did your clothe me? I was sick, did you care for me? I was an alien, did you take me in. What you've failed to do to the least of these, you failed to do to me because I'm not up in the sky somewhere. I'm waiting to be loved in people who hurt. And as you relate to people who hurt your relating to me." There is no Christianity that does not tie us up with the poor and the oppressed of the world. -Full clip can be seen here

This is simply unbelievable. Here is undoubtedly evidence that the Emerging Church has become the new movement for the social gospel. I find it interesting that in this entire video offered by the Emergent Video, there is no mention of the cross or repentance. Walter Rauschenbusch couldn't be more proud of the Emerging Church.

If Christ came to help the poor and end poverty, then He was an utter failure. But if He came to lead people to heaven that changes the heart that leads to social action, forgiveness, and love, then He triumphed. The Emerging Church falls well short of orthodox Christianity and must be opposed.

In light of this video and many of the other things done, written, and said by those in this movement, it should be made clear that the Emerging Church is not Christianity and it must be opposed. Therefore, they are a movement that does not lead to the real Christ, but rather leads persons away from Christ. They are wolves in sheep's clothing and are leading people to hell thinking they are right with God.

Let judgment be upon them!

Those might be harsh words, but much of the New Testament (and even the Old Testament) have similar things to say. This movement is nothing more than liberal Christianity with a postmodern spin. It does not represent the gospel nor does it represent Christianity.

What does it mean to be a Christian? It means to crawl before the cross in repentance knowing that we cannot save ourselves and that we deserve the just wrath of God in hell, but seeking His forgiveness on account of Christ's death and resurrection and to live out that repentance in everyday life. That is Christianity. It might be unpopular, but God couldn't care less about popularity or any one's opinion.
